Beige (homo to hetero)
The tower beige was first seen in the barn of Ned Jenson in 1955 and is the most commonly found beige today. They are most commonly called “beige”, “hetero beige”, or “homo beige”. The beige gene is a dominant recessive, so only one gene needs to be passed from one parent for it to be expressed in the “hetero” form. If a beige gene is passed from both parents, it’s considered “homo”. A beige chinchilla is described as having a pinkish/beige color on the top and sides with a white belly. A “homo beige” will be lighter in color then a “hetero beige”. Any chinchilla with beige coloring will have red eyes, pink ears and foot pads. Eyes range from a bright red color (often seen with blue iris) to a dark blood/Ruby color (almost black). When beige age, we often see them with freckles. They can appear at any stage in life and are found on the ears and foot pads.
Like any other color, a beige can be “off color” and/or oxidize causing a red huge to appear on the top of the fur. Like the standard color, the belly can also be “off color” causing it to look creamy, dull, or pink/red.
